Dear Mary Rennels,
·
Thank you for expressing your thoughts. What you said struck a chord in me because for a long time I didn’t think about the political implications of what I chose to do, and by the time I started thinking about them it seemed too late, for I felt trapped in the false life I had sought refuge in. I appreciate your call for resistance and change, but do you know how much strength it takes to fight the racism and misogyny both Irene and I are up against? Forgive me for asking this, for I don’t know you, but are you black or white? Did you grow up in comfort or in poverty? These things do make a difference, as you surely know, and I am curious to know where you are coming from.
