How different is the color line from state and national lines? Brian wants so terribly to “fit in” somewhere – to find comfort somewhere exotic. But then he would be doing to a place, then, what others always do to us – fetishize, and entrust with an arbitrary duty of comfort normalcy. Of course Irene would be weary; she knows as well as I and as well as Clare that no physical space could begin to unify the binaries that are within ourselves and that are constantly reminded to us in unintentional ways. Brian’s suggestion that Brazil would somehow be better is a perfect such example. How does he know that Brazil truly is a place of such excellent race relations? When slavery ended not even half a century before now….There are manifold issues that we — I —face each day as a cause of my race, but to believe that the solution is further estrangement would be trite.
